Rocking Around the Clock At Your 50s Theme Party

By Gail Leino

When thinking of throwing a 50s theme party, one has only to decide on the composition of the guest list to instantly have some great party ideas. For example, if you have looking for a fun and funky way to entertain a group of professional adults, perhaps those folks from work, consider a 50s theme party that celebrates the birth of the cocktail party. Housewives and party hostesses found themselves on the ever eyeful lookout for the newest style of glassware available. Plain and boring tumblers were not allowed unless they were accompanied by quirky trays or decanters. Finger foods and new drink concoctions were created or served to make your cocktail party the talk of the street for the week, until your neighbor would do everything in her power to surpass your success. Now, searching for the quirky, artsy glassware of the 50s means a fun trip through used stores and flea markets. Some pieces can be picked up quite inexpensively, while others are more collectible and therefore pricier. Either way, plan a menu of drinks that include cosmopolitans, martinis, and other 50s friendly drinks. Then plan a trivia game that tests your guests on their knowledge of popular culture, fashion trends, and political issues of the decade.

If you have a younger crowd coming to the party, or it will be a mixed family get together, consider turning your kitchen into a Burger/Hot Dog Buffet, complete with rootbeers or cherry colas for drinks. Playing music of the era including Pattie Page, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley and the Comets, and other chart breakers will provide a fun and festive atmosphere. Activities can include a Hula Hoop or Limbo Competition, Trivia Games, and consider holding a “Best I Love Lucy” impersonation competition. Just pick some of the best known episodes and have couples act them out. It will be too funny. You can have your DVD collection ready for the couples to look at for those who may have grown up in a potato sack and never saw Lucy or her reruns. To cap off the night, consider hiring an Elvis impersonator to come in and put on a show. This will be a party your guests will talk about for years to come!
